I would have liked to say I felt like a whole new person when I woke a few hours later, but it would have been a lie. I was groggy and even more sore than when Iâd gone to sleep, and my head was pounding. Since I figured Iâd slept enough, I forced myself to get out of bed anyway. Sleeping longer wouldnât have been fair to everyone elseâeven if I could have easily stayed in bed until tomorrow morning.
My thoughts shifted from my tired body to Devon the second I left the room, wondering what heâd been up to. It was rare that we spent more than an hour apart. We shared a room and volunteered for the same watch shift, and if one of us went on a run, the other did as well.
With the exception of the trip to Kroger, which I still hadnât gotten over completely.
It wasnât that we were codependent or anythingâIâd known couples like that who literally could not be away from one anotherâit was simply that we felt better knowing what the other person was up to. During the first week at the hospital, heâd gone out while I stayed here, and it had been hell for both of us. Iâd hardly been able to concentrate because I was so anxious waiting for him to come back, and later that night, Devon had confessed heâd had more than one panicked moment when he worried Hank might have joined up with another evil group and raided the hospital while he was away. After that, we never went out without the other.
Which was why him going to Kroger without me two days ago had bugged me so much. Heâd seemed totally okay with it, and I didnât get why or what had changed.
Thinking about what could have happened while he was gone had me walking faster as I made my way through the hospital corridors. People called out greetings or waved, many of them still looking on edge thanks to the breach the night before, but I didnât stop to talk to any of them until I came across Beatrix. Alone. She was standing outside the farm again, staring through the window just like she had been the last time I saw her. Maybe she was as into animals as Chris? It was possible.
âBeatrix?â I said as I slowed.
The girl tore her gaze from the world beyond the glass and focused her gray eyes on me. âRowan.â
Just like every time I saw her, the urge to make sure she was okay came over me, and I offered her a polite smile even as I found myself wondering why she was wandering around by herself. Weâd agreed these people should be watched, yet it was immediately obvious that no one else was around. Maybe someone was in the courtyard keeping an eye on her through the window, so they didnât give themselves away?
I turned my attention to the animals, trying to act nonchalant as I scanned the farm.
